A4 vs US Letter: Which Size Should You Choose for Printables?

Choose the printable version that matches the paper in your printer: A4 for A4 paper, or US Letter for Letter paper. A4 measures 210 × 297 mm, while US Letter measures 8.5 × 11 inches (215.9 × 279.4 mm). For coloring pages, fitting a file to a different paper size may be fine. For crafts that need accurate sizing, use the matching file and follow its printing instructions.

If a printable comes with two versions, you do not need to print both. The paper size tells you which file to open. Getting this right helps you avoid clipped edges, unexpected margins, and craft pieces that print smaller than intended.

A4 vs US Letter: size comparison

A4 and US Letter paper sizes shown at the same scale, with dimensions in millimetres and inches.

Dimensions for a sheet in portrait orientation
Paper size Width × height in mm Width × height in inches Shape
A4 210 × 297 mm Approximately 8.27 × 11.69 in Taller and narrower
US Letter 215.9 × 279.4 mm 8.5 × 11 in Shorter and wider

The sizes are close, but they are not interchangeable without checking your settings. An A4 page is about 0.69 inches taller than a Letter page. Letter paper is about 0.23 inches wider than A4.

Which size should you choose?

Look at the packaging for your paper before choosing a file. A4 is commonly used in the UK, Europe, Australia, and many other regions. Letter is commonly used in the United States and Canada. Your actual paper supply matters more than your location.

  • Your paper says A4: open the A4 version.
  • Your paper says Letter or 8.5 × 11: open the US Letter version.
  • You only have one file: check the product description and printing instructions before resizing it.

Some printables use other dimensions, such as square pages. Do not assume every downloadable file is A4 or Letter.

How to print a PDF on the correct paper size

  1. Open the PDF in a PDF reader.
  2. Choose your printer and open its print settings.
  3. Select the paper size loaded in the tray: A4 or Letter.
  4. Check portrait or landscape orientation against the template.
  5. Choose the scale setting recommended by the printable's instructions.
  6. Check the preview for missing edges, tabs, or text.
  7. Print one test page before printing the whole pack.

The names and locations of these settings vary between printers and apps. If you print from a phone, open the available paper and layout options rather than relying only on the default preview.

Should you use Actual Size or Fit to Page?

Actual Size, or 100% scale, preserves the PDF's intended dimensions. Use it when the instructions require accurate measurements. However, content outside your printer's printable area can still be clipped.

Fit adjusts the page to the printable area of the selected paper. It can help keep a coloring design on the sheet, but it may change the finished size. Adobe explains these options in its PDF page-sizing guide.

For a coloring page, a modest change in size is often acceptable. For a puppet, folding model, or template with a scale check, follow the supplied instructions. Matching the file and paper size is the best starting point.

Can you print A4 on Letter paper, or Letter on A4?

Usually, yes, if the printable can be resized. Select the paper you actually have and check a fitting option in the print dialog. Review the preview before printing.

An A4 file printed at its original size on Letter paper may lose content at the top or bottom. A Letter file printed at its original size on A4 may lose content near the sides. Whether anything is clipped also depends on the design's margins and your printer.

For a craft, resizing all pages consistently may keep the pieces proportional, but the finished object will change size. Avoid mixing pages printed at different scales. If the design must stay at a specific size, use the required paper instead.

Common printing problems and what to check

  • Edges are missing: check the selected paper size, preview, scale, and printer margins.
  • The design looks too small: check whether Fit, multiple pages per sheet, or a custom percentage is selected.
  • Craft pieces do not match: confirm every page came from the same paper-size version and used the same scale.
  • A borderless print looks enlarged: check your printer's borderless expansion settings. Use the mode specified by the template.
  • A JPG prints at an unexpected size: check the image-printing app's layout and sizing options. JPG files do not behave like a PDF with a fixed page layout.

Frequently asked questions

Is A4 the same as 8.5 × 11 inches?

No. 8.5 × 11 inches is US Letter. A4 is approximately 8.27 × 11.69 inches.

Which paper size is better for coloring pages?

Neither is automatically better. Choose the version that matches your paper and printer settings. The design and print quality matter more than the small difference in sheet dimensions.

Does choosing A4 or Letter change image quality?

Paper size alone does not determine quality. The source file, printer settings, and paper also matter. Enlarging a low-resolution image can make its lines look less sharp.

Does Actual Size mean the same as 100%?

For PDF printing, both generally mean no scaling. Check the print preview and any scale guide included with the template.

What should I check before buying a printable?

Check the included paper sizes, file formats, supplies, and usage terms. If you need a specific size, confirm it is supplied or that resizing is suitable for the project.

Before you press Print

Match your file to your paper, check the scale instructions, and print a test sheet. A small check now can save paper and make your next coloring or craft session easier.

Try the bird finger puppets or 3D turtle craft if you want a project with both A4 and US Letter files.
